Earth Day Tree Planting – April 26 2009

The Tree Planting event this year happened on the same day – April 26 on Sunday afternoon at York University. There were over 70 confirmed guests for this event and over 180 “maybies”, but due to forecasted rain showers only about 40 showed up – the same as last year.

This time we planted at a scenery location at Stong Pond. The event was organized by Green Garden Earth Team and the Black Creek Conservation Project with assistance of university student clubs: RuSSA at YorkU, RSA at UofT, RUC at Ryerson. There were 400 trees as we were expecting 100 people to show up! And you did it, good job everyone!

In this place four hundred years ago there had been a pristine forest with pure water, pure air, and rich soil. The Black Creek basin have had dramatically degraded. One of the reasons is that there are no more trees and bushes that can filter the water going into the river. I tend to agree with wise man’s saying: “clean where you are before building a new home, otherwise you’ll take the garbage with you”.

We had planted several kinds of trees and bushes, among which are Red Elm, Canadian Cedars and Hackberry. All the species are native to the area. We started off at the higher spot and then naturally split into smaller groups. I’ve heard continuous active conversations and laughter.

I’ll try to avoid the term “volunteer” because it sounds like we were working for somebody else rather than for ourselves. Thanks to the dedication of the guests of the Tree Planting event, each group planted around 20 plants and we have pretty much completely covered the supply staying there until the last plant was in the soil! There was no rain and at the very end the Sun came out for its normal blessings routine.

Please look at the photos carefully: you see the people who are practical about spirituality creating the Green Garden Earth now! Next day was bright and sunny just as our hearts were during the planting, and then the rain watered the new forest as a house-warming gift.

It was great to see participants from the last year and equally great to see new people!

Hope to see you there next time!
